Key Moments

Mindset & Expectation Management

The biggest challenge is aligning influencer mindset with brand expectations, avoiding assumptions about quick money for minimal work.

Professionalism Over Popularity

Influencers must be treated as professionals, focusing on consistent content, deadlines, and fair compensation rather than just follower counts.

Strategic Brand Selection

Brands should evaluate creators based on audience relevance, engagement, and values, not merely follower numbers, to build authentic partnerships.

Human Psychology Drives Impact

Social media validation shapes influencer behavior, making trust, authenticity, and understanding human psychology crucial for successful collaborations.

Influencer marketing has come a long way from being a relatively new concept to becoming a powerful tool in the world of advertising. Today, social media influencers are not just content creators; they are brand partners who can influence consumer choices, build brand visibility, and drive sales. Having worked with brands and influencers, I had the opportunity to experience the industry from behind the scenes, and it was certainly an eye-opener.

One of the most interesting aspects of influencer marketing is the ecosystem it has created. Influencers are compensated monetarily for their collaborations and often receive products, branded clothing, and other perks. In some of the campaigns I worked on, the deliverables were fairly straightforward: four Instagram stories and two posts or reels in a month. Along with the agreed payment, influencers received products worth a considerable amount, as well as branded clothing to feature in their content.

Influencer marketing is not just about how many people see a post. It is about the value created, the trust established, and the professionalism that sustains a partnership.

On paper, it seemed like a fairly attractive arrangement. However, the experience made me realise that the challenge was not always about the deliverables themselves, but about managing expectations.

The biggest challenge was understanding the mindset behind the influence. While many creators are hardworking professionals who understand the value of a brand partnership, I also encountered attitudes that made me question how some people perceived this line of work. There appeared to be an expectation of quick money, complimentary products, and brand recognition, sometimes without an equivalent appreciation for the responsibilities attached to the collaboration.

Of course, content creation requires time, creativity, planning, and consistency. Influencers deserve fair compensation for the audiences they build and the work they put into their content. However, there is a difference between recognising your professional worth and assuming that every collaboration should revolve around your expectations.

Another observation was how social media popularity sometimes seemed to blur the line between being an influencer and being a celebrity. The demands, expectations, and occasional arrogance could be surprising. A large following can certainly create opportunities, but it does not automatically translate into professional credibility. Meeting deadlines, communicating respectfully, and honouring commitments remain just as important in influencer marketing as they do in any other industry.

What made the experience particularly fascinating for me was the human psychology involved. Social media thrives on visibility, validation, and numbers. Likes, views, and followers have become measures of success, and for some, this recognition can influence how they perceive themselves and interact with others. It was interesting to observe how money, popularity, and brand associations could shape expectations and behaviour.

At the same time, the experience taught me that brands also have a responsibility to approach influencer partnerships strategically. Choosing a creator should go beyond follower count. Audience relevance, engagement, content quality, professionalism, and alignment with the brand’s values matter just as much. Clear deliverables, realistic timelines, and transparent communication help both parties build stronger working relationships.

For anyone entering the influencer marketing industry, my biggest takeaway would be to treat influence as a profession rather than just a lifestyle. Building an audience is an achievement, but sustaining trust and delivering value are what make that achievement commercially meaningful. For brands, the lesson is to look beyond numbers and invest in relationships that offer genuine alignment.

My experience gave me a perspective on an industry that often looks glamorous from the outside. Beneath the perfectly curated posts and exciting brand collaborations lies a business driven by expectations, negotiations, relationships, and human behaviour.

Ultimately, influencer marketing is not just about how many people see a post. It is about the value created, the trust established, and the professionalism that sustains a partnership. And perhaps the most interesting lesson I learnt was that understanding human behaviour can be just as important as understanding marketing itself.
