If you want to understand the brilliance of Manyavar branding, look at old photos of Indian weddings from twenty years ago, and you will notice a very clear pattern. The women are wearing heavy, expensive traditional outfits, while the men are standing in the background wearing basic office suits.

Men simply did not spend money on ethnic clothing because buying it required multiple frustrating visits to a local tailor. That huge empty space in the retail market is exactly where Ravi Modi built an empire.

If a customer trusts you on the most important days of their life, they will never complain about the price tag.

Starting in the late 1990s in Kolkata with a small loan from his mother, he saw the exact same problem while growing up around his father’s clothing shop. Men’s ethnic wear was a disorganised mess.

He started small, pushing ready-to-wear kurtas into multi-brand stores under the name Manyavar—a word demanding respect—with a parent company named after his son, Vedant.

Today, if there is a major festival or a wedding in the family, this brand is usually the first store people visit. They did not just sell clothes. They actively convinced an entire generation of men that showing up to a celebration in a regular shirt and trousers was embarrassing.

Manyavar Branding Dominates the Wedding Market

The smartest thing the company did was narrow its focus entirely to specific events. They do not try to sell you daily office wear, gym clothes, or casual weekend shirts. They wanted to be a clothing brand that a buyer would only look at when he’s preparing for a major life event.

By focusing strictly on weddings and festivals, they made their clothes feel like a mandatory part of the celebration. Bringing in Virat Kohli as an early ambassador sealed the deal. The ads never talk about thread counts or fabrics.

They just connect the clothes directly to the feeling of new relationships, reminding you that if you are attending a wedding, you are expected to dress in a wedding uniform.

When relatives wear vibrant colours and heavy embroidery, standing in grey office suits feels completely out of place. This brand took advantage of that exact feeling. They turned ethnic wear into essential event uniforms rather than optional fashion choices.

Manyavar branding used slogans telling men to come prepared and dressed for occasions. This was a brilliant psychological strategy. It created subtle social pressure. It made men feel like they were disrespecting hosts and events if they showed up wearing boring, everyday clothes.

This approach completely shifted consumer behaviour. Before this brand expanded, men would usually spend very little on their wedding outfits compared to the women in their families. Manyavar made it socially acceptable, and even expected, for the groom and his friends to spend serious money on their clothes.

They also solved a real physical problem by making buying incredibly fast and easy. Custom tailoring takes weeks of planning and constant follow-ups. Most men simply do not have the time to deal with that frustrating process. Now, a customer can walk into a clean, well-lit showroom, try on a heavily embroidered sherwani, and buy it the same day.

The real retail expansion started in 2008 when they opened their first exclusive store in Bhubaneswar. Opening so many stores after that made the brand completely unavoidable during the Indian wedding season.

Scaling the Retail Empire

Once they locked down the men, they launched Mohey for women and added kids’ ethnic wear, turning a single store into a one-stop shop for the whole family.

Most clothing companies try to chase every single fashion trend and appeal to all types of buyers. Manyavar branding proves that you do not need to do that to build a highly profitable retail business. You just need to target a specific occasion and dominate it completely.

If a customer trusts you on the most important days of their life, they will never complain about the price tag. You are no longer just selling them fabric. You are selling them the confidence to stand in front of their entire community and look exactly how they are supposed to look.
